Cross Country Skiing

North Country Trail Association Central New York Chapter

Sections of the trail in Madison Country offer good opportunities for cross-country skiing and, in some cases, enough trail width to support snow-shoeing in parallel as well. The trail is for non-mororized use only.
Some suggested locations:
• The NYS DEC owned sections within the Nelson Swamp Unique area—accessible from the trailhead parking on Constine Bridge Road. In addition to the main trail to the bridge
spanning Chittenango Creek, there is a 0.6 mile DEC interpretive trail loop trail that offers fine winter scenery. Several miles round trip.

• The Cazenovia Preservation Foundation owned Gorge Trail from Clark Street to Bingley Road. Check with CPF folks as to trail conditions and local guidelines. Parking at the Clark Street trailhead north of the Village.

• Emhoff Road to Carey Hill Road—parking at Emhoff Road on the west side just north of Bingley Road. This is a 1.2 mile trail segment.

• Carey Hill Road to Freber Road (formerly Hodge Road)—parking available at each trailhead. This section has a stairway near Carey Hill Road that requires you to carry your skis.

• Nelson Road trailhead— 1.5 miles south of Route 5. Relatively level sections both east and west from the trailhead, each about two miles long. The section to the west is heavily wooded in part.

• Canastota village—access from the west end of Port Street, a dead end from Stroud Street. Access is also available from South Main Street at James Street. The route is level as it parallels the CSX raised tracks and then turns south and climbs a bit. Length is
about 0.7 mile one way.
